Fight Voter Suppression

cowboys.votersuppressionThe Montana Republican Party is challenging the voter registrations of 6,000 Montanans. Over half of those challenges have come in Missoula County, where many, many students live. Other challenges have targeted Glacier and Hill Counties, both Reservation counties.

Write a letter to the editor and send a clear message that we don't take kindly to voter suppression 'round these parts.

1. Read Up on the Issue

The Montana Republican Party is actively trying to suppress the vote, targeting counties with large Indian, student, and low-income populations. [Missoulian, 10/2/08]

The Montana Republicans are operating in bad faith. Despite claiming that they are “just trying to ensure that election laws are obeyed,” GOP officials are refusing to share the list of challenged voters with voting advocates. [ Missoulian, 10/3/08]

Voter Fraud is a Fraud. An independent audit of Montana's elections in 2006 found absolutely no evidence of voter fraud. [Montana Secretary of State, 8/15/07 ] The truth is that voter fraud is extremely rare in America, with virtually no evidence of it found anywhere in the country. [New York Times, 4/12/07]

Partisan Voter Suppression is Common and Widespread. But there is a long history of partisan voter suppression in our country -- especially of Republicans using claims of voter fraud to deny minorities, low-income Americans, and students the right to vote. [The American Prospect, 4/1/08]

Even Unchallenged Voters are Likely to be Snared by this Net. These attempts to suppress the vote hurt us all. County election officials across the state right now are trying to focus on registering voters, turning around absentee ballots, and preparing for Election Day. These partisan voter suppression efforts are distracting them at the worst possible time -- and threatening all of our rights. [ Missoulian, 10/2/08]
